The following procedure should help you get DBS running on a Windows Vista machine. It might also work for Windows 7, but I have not tried it. See here for Windows XP.

• Install DBS onto the machine. (Better: Copy from a previous machine.)
• Ensure that DBS.BAT (or STARTDBS.BAT) is in the root (C:\) directory.
• On the desktop, create a shortcut to either DBS.BAT (or STARTDBS.BAT) in the root directory:

      - Right click on desktop
      - Select NEW SHORTCUT
      - Enter: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\COMMAND.COM /C \DBS.BAT
      - Click: NEXT
      - Enter: DBS
      - Click: FINISH

• Modify the shortcut for DBS:

      - Right click on the DBS shortcut
      - Select PROPERTIES
      - Select the PROGRAM tab
      - Change WORKING to C:\DBS
      - Click: ADVANCED
      - In the Config file name field, enter: \dbs\config.dbs
      - Click: OK
      - Select the COMPATIBILITY tab
      - Check: Run this program in compatibility mode
      - Select: Windows 95
      - Select the SCREEN tab
      - Click: Window
      - Click: OK

• Create the config.dbs file:

      - In Programs - Accessories - start NOTEPAD
      - Enter:
          dosonly
          device=c:\windows\system32\ansi.sys
          files=40
          fcbs=32,8
      - Select FILE - SAVE AS
      - Change Save as type to ALL FILES
      - Enter as file name: \dbs\config.dbs
      - Click: SAVE
      - Close notepad
    OR right-click on this file and save-as \dbs\config.dbs

• The DBS shortcut should now work to launch DBS in a DOS window.
