WUMD is a member of the Pacifica network, and we download many of our podcasts from there for rebroadcast. “Are We Alone” is one of the programs we broadcast from a podcast. Their entries on Pacifica consist of several mp3 files which can be inserted into a broadcast stream, with other promos or whatever in between the different cuts.

However, at WUMD, we usually just broadcast the program without our own inserts. For that reason, I do not get the podcast from Pacifica, but go to the podcast.seti.org site, where I can get the program all in one file.

Well, their site is down as they are moving, and they haven’t updated the online podcast for a few weeks. So, I’m forced to go back to Pacifica and download the segments. That gave me the idea to write a mp3 file joiner. That’s what I did.

The program let’s you select a group of files, put them in the order you want, copy mp3 tags from any or none of them, then edit the tags that will go into the resulting destination file.

MP3Joiner works like a charm. The files from AWA are numbered, with additional description, but the pattern is regular. I plan to enhance the program later by giving it a command line option to find the group of files and automatically order them, tag them, and create a new audio file. It could then use the same technology that PodGrabber uses and call an external program, like OMTAC, to add the new audio to the music database.
